Amazon Prime Video for Android TV launches on Play Store, but it’s pretty useless right now

The recent bad blood between Amazon and Google has been fascinating to watch, but there’s only been one real loser during the prolonged spat – the consumer.
Whether it was Amazon’s decision to pull the sale of Google products from its online store, or Google moving todrop YouTube support for the Echo Show,twice(and later threaten its removal from Fire TV devices), each twist and turn has resulted in less choice for the end-user.
Thankfully, calmer minds at both companies appear to have prevailed. Last week Amazon announced that it would finally bring Google’sChromecastrangeback to its storefront, while also confirming that talks are now in progress to ensure YouTube will stick around on Fire TV media players.
Now, Amazon is going one step further by finally introducing an Amazon Prime Video app for Android TV to the Play Store.
The app was first spotted by the folks over atAndroid Policeand you can see it for yourselfhere. As anyNVIDIA Shield TVuser will tell you, this isn’t the first time Prime Video has been made available for Android TV-powered devices, but we’ve never actually seen a listing for the app on the Play Store itself. In fact, it was only a few months back that we finally saw theAmazon Prime Video app arrive on the Play Storefor traditional Android devices.
Before you get too excited and rush to boot up your Sony Android TV or Nexus Player, however, it’s worth noting that the app is currently all but useless as it doesn’t seem to support any Android TV devices.
Android Policespeculates that this may be simply because Amazon has yet to update the app’s compatibility list on the Play Store, but we’ll have to wait and see to find out if this is truly a new dawn for Prime Video on Android TV.
While it isn’t the Google Cast support for Prime that everyone really wants, it’s certainly another step in the right direction in the Amazon-Google saga. Let’s hope that rumors Amazon isreadying a YouTube alternativedon’t spell doom for the shaky peace between the pair.
