Dark theme coming to Google Contacts Android app starting today
July 12, 2025
After years of ignoring them — and encouraging app developers to use a lot of white —Googleappears to be going all-in with dark themes, as many of its apps are getting the dark mode treatment.
Case in point, the latest update toGoogle Contacts(version 3.2) has a dark mode toggle, via9to5Google. As with otherGoogle apps with dark themes, the background becomes a dark grey and not a true black. Still, though, this is better than nothing.

Besides turning the background from white to grey, Google Contacts looks and functions much the same as it does in its default mode:
Interestingly, if you have the developer setting “Set Night mode” on the “Always on” toggle, you won’t be able to control the dark theme of Google Contacts. Instead, the dark mode will automatically be on with no way to switch it to light mode.

Google recently admitted thatdark modes positively affect the battery lifeof smartphones, which is probably part of the reason why we’re seeing such an about-face from the company. However, there’s still no word on whether or not there will ever be a system-wide dark mode baked right into Android, as is the case with manycustom ROMs. While it’s still unlikely, these recent app upgrades show that it at least is more plausible than ever.
