Galaxy Note 10 getting faster and more efficient 12GB RAM?

Samsunghas started mass production on 12Gb LPDDR5 mobile DRAM chips, the company has announced. In a post on itsnewsroomsite earlier today, Samsung outlined what the chips would offer and when we could expect to see them in smartphones.

Samsung’s 12Gb (Gigabit) LPDDR5 DRAM — the first of its kind for the industry — will be combined in groups of eight to produce 12GB (Gigabyte) LPDDR5 DRAM packages later this month. Samsung also says these 12GB modules are set to be used in high-end phones; given the timelines and intent, it seems likely one such DRAM package could power the upcomingGalaxy Note 10.

We have already seen12GB RAM on Android phoneslikeOnePlus 7 Pro,Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, andXiaomi Black Shark 2but this was typically of the previous LPDDR4X variety. LPDDR5 is set to be superior in several ways.

Firstly, there are data transfer and power improvements commonly found in new DRAM versions. 12Gb LPDDR5 is approximately 1.3 times faster than 12Gb LPDDR4X and uses up to 30 percent less power thanks to a new circuit design. Of course, this doesn’t mean smartphones using these chips would use 30 percent less power overall, only the DRAM module.

Additionally, LPDDR5 DRAM is said to be primed to take advantage of 5G and AI improvements, such as UHD video recording and machine learning.

This DRAM would certainly give the Galaxy Note 10 an edge over competing 12GB RAM phones but we don’t yet know for certain if that’s Samsung’s plan. There are only a few weeks to wait to find out though, theGalaxy Note 10 launches August 7.
