HUAWEI P50 series tipped to arrive with Harmony OS

HUAWEI launched theHarmony OS 2.0 developer betayesterday (December 16), allowing Chinese developers to test-drive the home-grown platform on select HUAWEI phones. The company also reiterated that the first Harmony OS phones would launch next year.
Now, China’sSina Techwebsite has reported that theHUAWEI P50will be “officially equipped” with Harmony OS, adding that the device is expected in Q1 2021. In other words, this could be the first flagship HUAWEI phone to receive a pre-installed version of the home-built operating system.
It’s unclear whether this would apply to all HUAWEI P50 series phones and whether it would apply to specific regions (e.g. China only). Nevertheless, HUAWEIpreviously told usthat Harmony OS is able to convert Android apps to run on the platform. So a smartphone running the platform might still have app support comparable to HUAWEI phones without Google integration.
The transition seems sensible in light of the manufacturer’s current situation then, as it seessliding market-sharein strongholds like Europe. It might not have anything to lose if Google support isn’t forthcoming any time soon and its market-share continues to decline.
