One M9 won’t be Quad HD, but the HTCButterfly 3 probably will

Gallons of digital ink have been spilled over the pros and cons of Quad HD (2560 x 1440) resolution, compared to “only” Full HD. We won’t startthat argumenthere again. One thing’s clear – there is no “good enough” where the mobile industry is going.

Just ask HTC, which@upleaksclaimswill jump to Quad HD for the Butterfly 3, the unannounced new generation of HTC’s Asia-centric plastic-clad flagship. The Butterfly 3 will come with a 5.2-inch Quad HD screen, according to the leakster, for a retina-pleasing 564 ppi.

That’s all that we “know” about the Butterfly 3 so far, though we could venture a guess and say the device will hit China, Taiwan, and Japan around the middle of the year.

What about theOne M9? All theleaks and rumorspoint to HTCsticking with Full HD for its new flagship. The device, due March 1, will come with a 5-inch Full HD IPS LCD display. In case you need some “evidence,” these wallpapers (optimized for Full HD) that wereallegedlyextracted from the M9 will have to do for now.

The comparatively lower resolution of the M9 could help it edge out some competitors in battery life, though the M9’s biggest rival has a secret weapon:Samsung’s Galaxy S6will feature a battery-sapping Quad HD screen, but its14nm Exynos processormay even the balance thanks to its lower power consumption.
