Press volume up + power to silence ringer in Android P

July 20, 2025

AtGoogle I/O 2018, Google announced thatAndroid P Betais rolling out to multiple Android devices. As such, we’re starting to find new exciting features in the operating system.

Like this one: in Android P, you will be able to execute a button combination that will put your phone into silent mode. Simply press the volume up button and the power button at the same time to turn your ringer off.

After doing so, a notification window opens on your device. See the screenshot below:

It would make way more sense for the button combo to be volume DOWN and the power button, but that combo already has a function:taking a screenshot. Either way, it will be nice to put your phone into silent mode without having to turn the screen on and swipe around.

The feature can be turned on or off if you don’t care for it. you may also choose whether the button combo completely silences your phone or just puts it into vibrate mode.

This new feature is likely part of the new “Digital Wellbeing” initiative Sundar Pichai mentioned during the Google I/O keynote earlier today. Google is taking seriously the idea that we are all spendingtoo much time on our phonesand need simple ways to shut off our digital lives to enjoy our real ones.

This new feature also is similar to another Android P trick calledShush, where turning your phone over puts it into Do Not Disturb mode.
