Report: Newly independent HONOR plans to ship more phones than HUAWEI in 2021

HUAWEIsold offits HONOR sub-brand last month due to pressure fromUS sanctionsand the brand’s supply chain, and it looks like the newly independent company has some lofty goals for 2021.

Now,Nikkei Asia Reviewreports that HONOR plans to ship roughly 100 million smartphones next year, citing multiple suppliers. This would purportedly make for an increase of 40% over current shipments.

Oddly enough, this could mean that HONOR ships more smartphones than its previous parent company HUAWEI. The outlet reports that HUAWEI plans to ship nearly 60 million units next year.

One potential hurdle for HONOR is US approval for suppliers, although these suppliers are reportedly expected to sign deals with the newly independent smartphone brand later this month.

Furthermore, Qualcomm statedearlier this monththat it was in talks with HONOR, while Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek is apparentlygearing upto supply the kind-of-but-not-really-upstart brand in 2021.

HONOR has traditionally relied on in-house Kirin processors for its top-end phones, but HUAWEI isn’t able to produce these high-end SoCs anymore due to the US trade ban. So it stands to reason that the new HONOR will be using MediaTek or Qualcomm chips for flagship devices if it gets US approval.
