Samsung wants to launch 600MP camera sensors (wait, what?)

July 15, 2025

Samsunghas been at the forefront of the modern megapixel wars in the smartphone industry, introducing 48MP, 64MP, and even 108MP camera sensors.

The company is aiming even higher though, as it’s nowannounced(h/t:SamMobile) that it’s hoping to bring 600MP camera sensors “for all.” Samsung reckons that our eyes apparently match a resolution of 500MP, so it stands to reason that it wants to exceed this resolution with a 600MP camera sensor.

The firm acknowledges that the major use-cases for image sensors have been in the smartphone industry, but it specifically points to autonomous vehicles, drones, and IoT use-cases in the future. It also points to UV and infrared camera sensors for use in medical and agricultural fields. This all suggests that a future 600MP camera sensor won’t be for smartphones, but what does Samsung say?

Do you want higher resolution cameras with small pixels or lower resolution cameras with big pixels?

“The 600MP sensor mentioned in the article is more of a long-term goal with no visible timeline at this point, and not necessarily a specific project in motion,” a Samsung representative toldAndroid Authorityin an emailed response.

“We do plan to come out with a number of image sensors throughout the year, so hope we do get there in the near future,” the representative added.

Samsung was unable to clarify whether these new sensors would exceed 108MPs, but it certainly sounds like going higher will be a key strategy for it in 2020 and beyond. There are also rumors of a192MP phonecoming next month, so this could potentially be one of the upcoming sensors in question.
