Xiaomi accidentally uses Apple ads to promote its latest Apple clone product

July 11, 2025

As first spotted by a pair of sites (CX LiveandDaring Fireball, viaMacRumors), Xiaomi uploaded an Apple ad to its own website — as well as several others — to promote its new Mimoji, which are eerily similar to Apple’s similarly-named Memoji.

Xiaomi claims that the uploading of a competitor’s ad to promote its own product was an accident. The ads have since been removed and Xiaomi’s public relations general manager, Xu Jieyun, explained that Xiaomi staff had “uploaded the wrong content” to the sites.

If one were to create a Venn diagram of what Mimoji are as compared to Memoji, you would likely have a single, solid-color circle. The Mimoji system allows you to create 3D avatars of yourself using facial recognition. Once you get an avatar created, you may then customize it with eyewear, hats, and other accessories.

This isn’t the first time Xiaomi has released a product eerily similar to something Apple had previously created. TheXiaomi Mi 8looked almost exactly like an iPhone X and even launchedwith a clone of Apple’s Animoji, which is similar to Memoji. Xiaomi also released a set of true wireless earbuds that weredead ringers for Apple’s very popular AirPods.
