Xiaomi wants to know if you’ll buy a $1,500 phone from the company

Xiaomihas ruled the budget smartphone segment for a while now. Even its flagship phones are usually more affordable than what the competition has to offer. But last year, theMi 10 Ultratouched the $1,000 mark at the top end, and now it seems the Chinese firm is looking to go beyond that premium price barrier.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has asked followerson Weiboif they would buy a 10,000 yuan ($1,548) phone from the company. He also asked them what a Xiaomi phone with this price tag should look like.

The question could be a hint at an upcoming expensive Xiaomi device, possibly the company’sfirst foldable phonethat’s been in the works for a while now. Then again, it could just be the company testing the waters before it decides to leap into the ultra-premium smartphone segment.

This is not the first time that Jun hashintedat Xiaomi’s desire to break away from its reputation of being a budget smartphone maker. The company even started selling itsMi 10 flagshipin India last year, signaling that its willing to try its luck in the premium space, in a country where it built its strong market share at the back of entry-level devices.

Nevertheless, we expect to hear more about Xiaomi’s plans for uber-expensive phones on February 7, when Jun addresses Mi fans for the Chinese New Year.
